6 ways to use data in Learning and Development to boost performance
Understanding and using data continues to be a hot topic in L&D. And it’s of no surprise really. Without data, we are working in the dark, and today’s digital solutions can give us much-needed insight into our learner behaviour and course performance - every L&D team should be thinking about this critical topic.
So to help you understand how data can be used in your organisation here are 6 ways to start using data analytics today.
Assessing learner progress: Data analytics can track learners' progress and identify areas where they are excelling or struggling.
Personalising learning: Data analytics can be used to personalise learning experiences based on individual learners' needs and preferences.
Identifying learning trends: Data analytics can be used to identify trends in learners' behaviour and performance, which can inform the development of new learning strategies and approaches.
Evaluating the effectiveness of learning programs: Data analytics can be used to measure the effectiveness of learning programs and identify areas for improvement.
Improving course design: Data analytics can be used to analyse learner data and identify patterns that can inform the creation of more practical courses.
Enhancing the learner experience: Data analytics can be used to optimise the learner experience, for example by identifying and addressing barriers to learning.
As with everything the use of data does require some initial groundwork. To use data analytics in learning, it is necessary to have systems in place to collect and analyse learner data, such as learning management systems (LMSs), Learning Experience Platforms (LXPs) or Analytics Dashboards such as PlayFab. It is also important to have a clear plan in place for how the data will be used (there is no point in gathering data for data’s sake) and of course to ensure that learners' privacy is protected.
Serious Games and Simulations are a perfect way to start gathering performance data on your training programmes. Serious Games and Simulations sit between the theoretical content of the classroom and the application of skills in the real world - they provide a safe space to practice. And during that practice, we can gather data around how a learner tackles a problem, how long they take, where they ask for help and many other data points that can help you refine your pre-practice training, as well as support people to improve.
